Picking the winners

چکیده
We analyze the problem of choosing the w contestants who will win a competition within a group of n > w competitors when all jurors commonly observe who the w best contestants are, but they may be biased. We study conditions on the con guration of the jury so that it is possible to induce the jurors to always choose the best contestants, whoever they are. If the equilibrium concept is dominant strategies, the condition is very strong: there must be at least one juror who is totally impartial, and the planner must have some information about who this juror is. If the equilibrium concept is Nash (or subgame perfect) equilibria the condition is less demanding: for each pair of contestants, the planner must know at least one juror who is not biased in favor/against any of them. Furthermore, the latter condition is also necessary for any other equilibrium concept. We analyze as a speci c application the case where each juror is biased in favor of one contestant and propose a simple and natural mechanism for this case. Key Words: mechanism design; contests; biased jurors; dominant strategies; Nash equilibrium. J.E.L. Classi cation Numbers: C72, D71, D78. The author is grateful to L. Corchón and W. Measuring Consensus in Binary Forecasts: NFL Game Predictions
Previous research on defining and measuring consensus (agreement) among forecasters has been concerned with evaluation of forecasts of continuous variables. This previous work is not relevant when the forecasts involve binary decisions: up-down or win-lose. In this paper we use Cohen’s kappa coefficient, a measure of inter-rater agreement involving binary choices, to evaluate forecasts of Natio...
متن کاملThe Benefit and Cost of Winner Picking : Redistribution Vs Incentives by Axel Gautier , Florian Heider
A multi-divisional firm can engage in ”winner-picking” to redistribute scarce funds efficiently across divisions. But there is a conflict between rewarding winners (investing) and producing resources internally to reward winners (incentives). Managers in winning divisions are tempted to free-ride on resources produced by managers in loosing division whose incentives to produce resources, antici...

More generally, the object in an office pool is ...
متن کاملStock Picking, Industry Picking and Market Timing in Sell-Side Research
Sell-side analysts employ different benchmarks when defining their stock recommendations. For example, a ‘buy’ for some brokers means the stock is expected to outperform its peers in the same sector (“industry benchmarkers”), while for other brokers it means the stock is expected to outperform the market (“market benchmarkers”), or just some absolute return (“total benchmarkers”). We use these ...

At present, the fruit picking in most countries still largely relies on manual operation. Manual fruit picking can protect the fruits from damage during the operation process. However, it is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and poses a potential safety risk to the workers while working at heights not reachable.
